"I Have Been Chosen!" - Eleven Months

Inspired by Queenie Liao, the ORIGINAL creative mom! Of course, I added my love for "Toy Story" in this monthly photo; thanks to Auntie Jen, who gave Owen the Alien onesie!

Fun Facts About Owen:
  • Frowns when you say "no" to him
  • Favorite show is "Ruff Ruff, Tweet, and Dave"
  • Has 6 teeth (4 on top, 2 on the bottom)

Here's an update on our 11-month old beast baby!

Eating: I may have been a little late on introducing a variety of foods to Owen and getting him to feed himself. He's pretty good at eating anything we give him, but he'd rather have us feed him. And because I just want him to eat, I sometimes oblige. I know. I'm a pushover, but he's my firstborn, and I'm happy to spoil him until the next child comes. And if we don't feed him, he'll just play with his food and push everything to the floor (much to Wendy's delight).

We're also weaning him onto sippy cups! He doesn't like the spill-free ones (haha, of course), so his drinking time is always supervised. He also likes to remove the tops because he knows he can drink straight from the cup faster, but we all know drinking out of cups is not in the near future.

Sleeping: We were late on sleep-training Owen as well. I think it was for a number of reasons, but I think it all stemmed from when I used to breastfeed him at night. He always fell asleep on the boob, and I would fall asleep soon after - so it just became our norm, even after I was no longer breastfeeding. However, Ralph and I realized that Owen was getting a bit big to sleep in our bed, so we decided to grit our teeth, bear down, and get a new routine going.

We're on Day 4 of sleep-training using the Ferber method, and I'm proud to say that Owen only whined/cried for 5 minutes before he began to rock himself to sleep! Day 1 was a nightmare - he cried/screamed for 1 hour. It was pretty unbearable (for all of us), but I kept telling myself and Ralph that Owen wasn't being tortured - it was just his way of protesting. Day 2, he cried for 50 minutes, and he cried for 45 minutes on Day 3; we were expecting him to cry for at least 30 minutes tonight, but he proved us wrong! It may be a fluke, but whatever!

And ever since we started this whole routine, Owen has slept through the night each night. He woke up once last night, but he cried for only a minute or two before he fell asleep on his own again. Let's hope we all can keep this up. By the end of this week, we'll move his playpen to his room. We can't have him sleeping in his crib because 1) He falls asleep sitting up, and I'm afraid he'll fall over and hit his head on the side of the crib, and 2) He's chewing the paint off his crib, and I'm afraid he'll get poisoned or something. (Note to future self, don't buy a fancy crib for future babies...lol, jk, sort of).

Playing: Since Owen found his legs/feet, he's done nothing but walk and walk and walk. We've made a big play pen in our living room with the Regalo Safety Gate, and it has been the biggest life saver for ANYONE who watches him. When he's inside, he plays with/chews on his toys like a good little boy...though he does, from time to time, shake the gate because he wants to get out. But when he IS outside, he's a terror. He messes with the blinds, opens the kitchen cabinets and throws everything out, plays with Wendy's food and water bowls, and all that good stuff. It's only a matter of time until he learns how to break out. Lord help us all when that day comes.

And when we can, we take him to a local park so he can really stretch his legs. And, of course, we take him to THE Park whenever we can. Today was the first day we went to Disneyland since we were blocked out during the Winter. Owen met a few of his heroes.

One more month, and this little man is a whole year old! WHAT?! Until then!
